Oregon Law requires a child who is 7 years of age or younger to have certain health screenings before entering èßäÊÓƵ for the first time. Screenings help remove potential barriers to a child’s education. In addition, each elementary èßäÊÓƵ offers periodic vision and hearing screenings for èßäÊÓƵ in specific grades.

Vision Screening
requires all èßäÊÓƵ who are age seven and younger and who are beginning an education program for the first time to submit a Student Vision and Dental Screening Certification (link below) within 120 days of enrollment in èßäÊÓƵ stating that the student has received an eye examination or vision screening, including any treatment or assistance to correct vision.
At each elementary èßäÊÓƵ, the Multnomah Education Services District (MESD) School Health Services program offers an annual vision screening for èßäÊÓƵ in Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 3. A “vision screening” is an eye screening test to identify potential vision health concerns. Kindergartners and 1st grade èßäÊÓƵ also receive a hearing screening on the same day. The School Nurse oversees these screenings. Screening results for vision are sent home to parents/guardians.
The School Nurse is able to screen any student if a teacher or parent has a concern. If the Nurse is unable to provide a vision screening, the student may schedule an appointment with a Multnomah County for that screening.
MESD School Health Services can refer families to community resources to help reduce costs for èßäÊÓƵ needing an eye examination or prescription glasses.
If you do not want your child included in a vision screening, you must submit a written request to the èßäÊÓƵ each èßäÊÓƵ year.

Dental Screening

Community Dental Services
Multnomah County’s School Dental Sealant and Screening Program provides (at no cost to parents) at most Multnomah County elementary èßäÊÓƵs and some middle èßäÊÓƵs. Check with your èßäÊÓƵ to learn more.
offers dental hygiene services to any youth in grades K-12 who live or go to èßäÊÓƵ in Multnomah County. The student does not need to attend èßäÊÓƵ in the Reynolds School District. The Student Health Center is located at Reynolds High School, 1698 SW Cherry Park Rd, Troutdale.

offer dental health services to children and families who are new Medicaid (OHP) patients enrolled with CareOregon Dental. They also see uninsured patients for urgent care. Call 503-988-6942 between 8 am-4:45 pm Monday-Friday to make an appointment.

Hearing Screening
Hearing screenings help detect hearing loss in èßäÊÓƵ which could impede potential academic success and contribute to speech and language delays and social and emotional problems. At each elementary èßäÊÓƵ, the MESD School Health Services program offers an annual hearing screening for èßäÊÓƵ in Kindergarten and Grade 1, on the same day that vision screening is scheduled. The School Nurse oversees these screenings. Screening results for hearing are sent home to parents.
The School Nurse may refer other èßäÊÓƵ-aged èßäÊÓƵ for screening, as well as those in K-1 requiring follow up, to the licensed MESD audiologist, who conducts a comprehensive exam and makes referrals as indicated.
If you do not want your child included in a hearing screening, you must submit a written request to the èßäÊÓƵ each èßäÊÓƵ year.
