Hi Riders,
Spring is here! As the weather gets nice, we sometimes see èßäÊÓƵ opting to come in late or leave early on bright, sunny days. Please remind your student that attendance matters! When we look at grades, èßäÊÓƵ who are here and in class everyday are passing all, or most, of their classes. If you feel your student needs help making an attendance plan, reach out to their èßäÊÓƵ counselor. Quarter three grades are posted in ParentVue. If you get report cards mailed to you, they should be in your mailbox this week. If you have questions about grades, please reach out. We have nine weeks left of èßäÊÓƵ, and we want everyone finishing strong.

Hi Riders,
Thank you to everyone who came to the Public Education Forum last Thursday. We had over 100 people there to ask our elected officials in Salem questions about how to adequately fund èßäÊÓƵs. Winter sports are coming to an end. Thank you to all of the athletes and parents who participated in winter sports, and a huge thank you to our coaches for all they do each day to support the success of our athletes both in and out of the classroom.

Principal’s Message
Hi Riders,
This week will be our annual Black History Month Assembly. Our Black Student Union creates this celebration each year, and I look forward to seeing what they will be performing this year.
We have some upcoming events for our community. Thursday, February 20th is a Forum on Funding for Public Education with our elected officials from North Portland. Come to Roosevelt at 7pm on Thursday to hear how our elected officials are working to ensure stable èßäÊÓƵ funding. This event is open to the entire North Portland community. We will be hosting two events in March for families with questions around immigration. Those events are open to families of PPS èßäÊÓƵ in North Portland only.
I know there have been questions about support for our LGBTQIA2+ èßäÊÓƵ after some decisions at the federal level - especially decisions about pulling support for our transgender èßäÊÓƵ across the United States. Roosevelt continues to be a place where all èßäÊÓƵ are welcome and are encouraged to come to èßäÊÓƵ as their authentic selves. Our community is stronger because of the rich diversity in our student body. Part of that diversity is our LGBTQIA2+ èßäÊÓƵ and staff. The Oregon Department of Education released a LGBTQIA+ Student Success Plan a few years ago and stated “We set forth this plan...to establish strategies to increase inclusivity, increase student belonging, reduce bullying, address bias-based harassment and campus assaults, and improve attendance.” At Roosevelt, we will continue to follow this plan and other guidance from ODE and the State of Oregon If you or your student has questions or wants support, please reach out to their counselor.

Hi Riders,
This is the second week of Black History Month. Last week and this week, teachers are spending time teaching lessons about Black excellence in our different classes. Our Black Student Union presented to the èßäÊÓƵ board last week about the work we do around Black History Month. They highlighted the student-led and planned Black History Month assembly that will be on February 21st this year. Thank you to all of the work that our èßäÊÓƵ are doing to create spaces to highlight excellence across our èßäÊÓƵ and in our history.

Hi Riders,
Welcome to the second semester! It’s hard to believe that half of the èßäÊÓƵ year is over.
I know that there have been a lot of questions about some of the recent executive orders about èßäÊÓƵs and immigration. Roosevelt High School welcomes and values all èßäÊÓƵ, and we believe that our èßäÊÓƵ new to the United States bring so many strengths to our community. All èßäÊÓƵ, regardless of national origin or documentation status, are welcome here. We will continue to honor the Sanctuary designations that our state and city have put in place. Oregon Department of Education put out a statement last week that said “Oregon èßäÊÓƵs are still prohibited from providing information or assistance to immigration officials unless required by a judicial subpoena.” We will continue to keep our immigrant èßäÊÓƵ safe at èßäÊÓƵ.
If you have questions about immigration and/or how to ensure your family has the information you need, join us for one of our Know Your Rights events open to all PPS families in North Portland. These events will be March 6th and March 14th. More information will be coming soon!

Hi Riders,
We have two weeks until the Student-Parent-Teacher Conferences. Conferences will be Monday, November 25th and Tuesday, November 26th from 8:30am to 8:00pm. All conferences will be held arena-style, so you can have access to all of your student’s teachers. You will enter through the front doors, and we will get you pointed in the right direction. Conferences are an important part of the èßäÊÓƵ year, and we want all families to come and talk with teachers. If you cannot attend, you can email teachers and your student’s counselor to see if you can schedule times outside the two-day conference time. We believe that a student’s success is because of the strong partnership between the home and the èßäÊÓƵ. We appreciate this dedicated time to connect with each of you.

HeART of Portland, the annual celebration of local student artists, is returning to the Portland Art Museum (PAM) beginning April 16.
The two-week fine arts showcase features work by èßäÊÓƵ from across èßäÊÓƵ and is made possible by the Arts Access Fund, which also supports elementary visual and performing arts educators.
kicks off with an opening reception at PAM on April 16 at 6:30 p.m. and concludes with the Miller Family Free Day on April 27. The opening reception will include musical and theatrical performances, as well as a set from the elementary èßäÊÓƵ honor choir – made up of two singers from each PPS elementary – and the debut of the honor dance collective.
In addition, the showcase will feature more than 100 works of student visual art, handpicked by PPS arts educators, and a collaborative art project for K-12 èßäÊÓƵ that embraces the rebellious spirit of the current PAM exhibition,
The reception and HeART of Portland exhibits are free and open to everyone. Please join us in lifting up our student artists!
èßäÊÓƵ is continuing to host a series of events aimed at starting productive conversations about what is possible in the systems we create for our children with disabilities.
As part of this series, we are excited to welcome you to a free screening of on Thursday March 20 at . Doors open at 6 p.m. and the movie begins at 7:00.
The Ride Ahead is a film about adult life with disabilities by a man with disabilities. It is the debut of 21-year-old Samuel Habib who, struggling to find his place in the world, decides to make a film that charts how a group of disabled adults navigate challenges and forge their own unique paths. The film serves as a roadmap for himself and others and illustrates the compelling power of one person truly determined to live life on his own terms.
In documenting his journey, Samuel is following in the footsteps of his father, the filmmaker Dan Habib. You can learn more about their work .
Staff, families, and community members are all invited. Parking is free and McMenamins' full menu is available for ordering. We hope to see you there!
In meteorological terms, Portland’s first big weather event of 2024 was the definition of a perfect storm. Frigid temperatures and high winds combined with snow and ice to bring down tree limbs, close roads, scramble traffic, freeze pipes, and knock out power for tens of thousands of residents.
It was a metaphorical perfect storm for èßäÊÓƵ as well. Fallen trees cut power to multiple èßäÊÓƵs and others have suffered water damage from broken pipes. Lack of heat was also a problem, and impassable roads, paired with snowed-in and icy parking lots, made it impossible for buses to run safely. Those same conditions limited how the district’s facilities and operations teams can even assess the scope of the issues, let alone begin working on solutions. And icy sidewalks meant walkers have no safe route to èßäÊÓƵ.
This week could bring similar conditions to the Portland area, and PPS’s School Closure Team is ready to meet the challenge. The team convenes regularly during inclement weather to take all of the above into careful consideration. By now, families are quite familiar with how the district communicates these decisions. What’s perhaps less known is how district leaders arrive at such decisions in the first place.
